Will the BlackBerry (and RIM) survive?

While several tech firms have serious challenges to address in 2013, few face the do-or-die pressure of Research In Motion Ltd. The company pioneered the smartphone business with the iconic BlackBerry, but has seen its market share crushed by the iPhone and Android offerings. At this point, even Microsoft’s underdog Windows Phone is thought to have an edge over the old-school BlackBerry. RIM has effectively doubled-down by cleaning house in its executive suite—naming Thorsten Heins to the CEO slot—and building the BlackBerry 10 operating system, which the company says will take the platform several levels higher. The first phones on the new platform are expected to launch sometime in February or March. After that, the pressure will be on RIM to show traction with customers, but its unclear how much time the company will have. Some analysts worry that any drop in subscribers before then will start to hurt cash flow from RIM’s lucrative backbone network service.
